Marching Band
The McGavock Marching Band has a long and rich tradition of excellence. The marching band consists of students from grades 9-12 and rehearses in the Summer and Fall months. The band performs at home football games and 2 to 4 National or Regional contests. The Marching Band hosts the annual Music City Invitational which awards the prestigious Mayors Cup Trophy.
McGavock is a 25-time TN State Marching Champion, a 12-time Grand Champion at the prestigious Contest of Champions, a 5-time Bands of America Grand National Finalist, and a 3-time Bands of America Regional Champion. The Marching Band has also participated in over 20 parades and festivals across the United States and Mexico.
Color Guard
The McGavock Color Guard is a non-musical section that provides a dynamic visual impact to the Marching Band’s on field performance.
They perform alongside the Marching Band at football games and competitions in the Fall. The purpose of the Color Guard is to enhance the music that the marching band is playing via the synchronized spinning of flags, sabres, rifles, or through dance.
Wind Ensemble
The McGavock Wind Ensemble is the premier concert ensemble of the Band Program and is renowned for excellence onstage.
The Wind Ensemble consists of the top players in Grades 10 -12 and rehearses primarily during school. Performing Grade VI literature, the group consistently receives Superior Ratings at the MTSBOA Concert Performance Assessment Festival and performs 3 to 4 public concerts throughout the year. The ensemble was selected to perform at the TMEA State Conference in the Spring of 2017. This group is by audition and recommendation from the Band Directors.
Symphonic Band
The McGavock Symphonic Band consists of students from Grade 9 -12 and rehearses during the school day. Performing Grade IV literature, the group consistently achieves Superior ratings at the MTSBOA Concert and Sight Reading Festival. The band performs 3 public concerts during the school year.
Beginning Band
The McGavock Beginning Band consists of students in ANY GRADE who wish to pursue learning a wind or percussion instrument (including a secondary instrument). This ensemble educates students on the fundamental building blocks of music reading, tone production, and performance. Students in this ensemble are encouraged to pursue membership in the Marching Band and other ensembles as well.
Indoor Winter Percussion and Indoor Winter Guard
The McGavock Winter Percussion Ensemble and McGavock Winter Guard each provide the students with a Winter season competitive opportunity. Wind Band members are also eligible for positions in these ensembles when needed. The goal of the ensembles is to advance student performance skills during the Winter months. The group was named WGI World Championship finalists in 2018.Students are selected by audition and recommendation from the Band Directors. A participation cost is associated with these ensembles.
